Dance Movement Therapy Part 3

All of it is valid. All of it is welcome. The facilitator is there as a gentle guide, not a director.

Some DMT Facilitators might mirror your movements, copying what you do as a way of showing that they see you and understand you.

This mirroring can create a powerful sense of connection and validation. Other times, the facilitator might move alongside you, creating a shared experience of expression.

After the movement portion, there's usually time for reflection.

This might involve talking about what the experience was like, what feelings came up, or what you noticed in your body.

But even this verbal processing is gentle and optional. If you don't want to talk, that's okay too.

So what makes moving your body so healing?

Scientists have discovered that physical movement has profound effects on our mental and emotional health.

When you move, especially in free, expressive ways, your body releases chemicals that make you feel good.

Your nervous system begins to calm down. Tension that's been building up in your muscles starts to release.

And emotions that have been stuck inside you finally have a way out...

But beyond the chemistry, there's something deeper happening.

When you move through an emotion, literally moving your body in a way that expresses anger, sadness, joy, or fear, you're completing an emotional cycle.

You're not just thinking about the feeling or talking about it. You're allowing it to move through you and then let it go.

Think of it like a wave. Emotions are meant to flow through us, like water. But often, we try to hold them back or push them down.

Dance Movement Therapy teaches us to ride the wave instead, to feel the emotion fully, express it through movement, and then watch it naturally subside.

This is especially powerful for people dealing with trauma. Trauma gets stored in the body in ways that talk therapy alone can't always reach.

It shows up in your posture, in chronic tension, in the way you hold yourself.

Through gentle, guided movement, DMT helps release trauma from the body, bit by bit, in a way that feels safe and manageable.

One of the most healing aspects of Dance Movement Therapy is the complete absence of judgment.

In so many areas of life, we're constantly being evaluated. Are we good enough? Are we doing it right? Do we measure up?

In the DMT space, all of that falls away. There's no "good" or "bad" movement. There's no "right" or "wrong" way to express yourself.

Whether your movements are big and dramatic or small and subtle, whether they look graceful or awkward, they're all equally valid.

This radical acceptance can be incredibly freeing...

Many people spend their whole lives trying to hide parts of themselves or fit into someone else's idea of who they should be.

Dance Movement Therapy says, "Bring all of yourself. Show up exactly as you are. Move in whatever way feels authentic to you. You are welcome here."

For people who struggle with body image issues, this can be transformative.

Instead of judging your body for how it looks, you begin to appreciate it for what it can do, for its ability to express, to feel, to move, to heal.

You start to develop a kinder, more compassionate relationship with yourself.

While some people do Dance Movement Therapy one-on-one with a therapist, many sessions happen in groups.
